Narration In Favor Of Books Why the Whales Came
Gracie and her friend Daniel have always been warned to stay away from the Birdman and his side of the island. But then they find a message in the sand and discover the Birdman is not who they thought. They build up a lovely friendship with him, but when the children get stranded on Samson Island they don’t know whether to believe the birdman’s story that the island is cursed. Set against the backdrop of World War I, in the tradition of Friend or Foe and Private Peaceful Michael Morpurgo brings the emotional reality of conflict to life in a way that is accessible to younger readers.Declare Containing Books Why the Whales Came

This story is quite brilliant. I love the way how the start is quite boring so it grips the reader to the edge of their seat. Then the story becomes more active. To follow Gracie and Daniel through their adventures is interesting. Daniel is brave and outgoing, whereas Gracie is shy and hidden away. This doesn't stop her from facing her fears and following her best friend, though.First of all, Gracie doesn't want to know the Birdman, scared the rumours are true, not only about the Birdman, butI first read this when I was about 8 years old. I remember being very moved by it. I no longer own the book, but when I stumbled across a copy in the library whilst helping my daughter choose a book, I decided to bring it home to reread it. My daughter is only 5, so she isn't ready for it yet, but I am glad that I reread it.I didn't fully remember the story, just the basic outline. I'm not eight anymore, so although I could remember the parts that I had found very moving when I was small, they
Very enjoyable; a fast, easy and absorbing read that really made me feel like I was on the Isles of Scilly at the dawn of the first world war. Some of the scenes were very evocative, particularly when Gracie and Daniel went out fishing on their own. Without giving anything away, I'd read the book again just to re-live that experience! The only inconsistency I spotted was that the Narwhal that was found by the Birdman, Gracie, and Daniel was constantly referred to as a she, yet it had a tusk which
Another fantastic book! I just love the way Morpurgo crafts his writing so that it paints a picture so vividly in your mind as if you are there sharing the same experiences with the characters. The story itself is extremely heart warming and leaves cliffhangers after each chapter. My favourite characters were the harmless and lonely Birdman and the strength of Gracies mother character. Morpurgo draws you in so that you enjoy the emotions and thrill of the characters in the story.
A great story by a great story teller. Gracie and Daniel are two young friends living on Bryher an island in the Sillies during the first world war, 1914. Their hobby is making and sailing model boats and through their hobby they meet the Bird Man who they have been told to keep away from. There is a lot of superstition around the Bird Man who is a mystery to most of the inhabitants, he lives alone in a cottage away from the village with his dog Prince. He once lived on Samson Island which
This book is realistic fiction because this book has a story that could happen to someone, but it isnt real, because there are some nonrealistic things in there. The story made me feel excited because I wanted to know why the whales came but also scared because this story happened during the scary world war 1. The characters did seem sort of real because world war 1 happened and just like Gracies dad people went to the army to fight against Germany. The story made me think about the world war 1
perfect for 8 year old
